MAZZO, A POST -TRATTORIA

MAZZO is a project by Marco Baccanelli and Francesca Barreca. We like to define ourselves as a post-trattoria: a place of traditional cuisine, but translated in a personal and contemporary dimension, rich in cultural, visual, historical, and artistic references. Ours is a table built on immediacy and spontaneity, where Italian—and specifically Roman—roots become the starting point for a continuous movement of research and exploration. The products of breeders, farmers, winemakers and cheese makeraccompany us in this story made of contrasts and fusions, where market-based popular cuisine and family recipes intertwine with reflections on the present and on sustainability.

MAZZO's WINE BAR

MAZZO’s wine bar is an everyday refuge, a place to enjoy a glass of wine before heading home, grab an aperitivo, or pick up a bottle to take with you.
Its vibrant colors are a wink to ’60s trattorias and lift the weight off the end of the day The wine bar opens at 6 PM, one hour before the restaurant. Here you’ll find great wines, craft beers, cocktails, and spirits.
To go with your drink, we serve a selection of restaurant dishes in “half-portion” format, along with a few classic bar snacks.
No reservation needed, there’s always a stool and a glass of wine waiting for you.

LISTENING TRATTORIA

MAZZO is a listening trattoria: a place where sound flows through the room and ties the spaces together. Our audio system fills the venue evenly, and the acoustic comfort is designed for everyone. The entire interior is lined with sound-absorbing panels which, together with the choice of materials—like wooden flooring—and the near absence of glass, make it easy to enjoy music and hold a conversation. Even at full house, you can hear the person in front of you clearly.

ABOUT US

After training at the Gambero Rosso cooking school and working in some of Italy’s most interesting restaurants, we created The Gastronauts Italian Project (later The Fooders): a live performance format that combined food, music, and graphic design across events and festivals worldwide.
In 2013, we opened MAZZO: 10 seats around a communal table in Centocelle, helping lay the foundations of the “New Italian Trattoria.”
In 2019, we chose to close MAZZO and launch Mazzo Invaders, a world tour bringing our idea of cuisine, Roman spirit, and—above all—conviviality from Paris to Tokyo, from Zurich to Barcelona.
Around the same time, Legs was born: our pop cousin serving fried chicken & beer.
In 2023, MAZZO reopened in San Lorenzo with a broader, carefully designed architectural project enriched by the work of artisans and creatives. Every detail expresses the same idea of welcome and sharing: a cultural hub where we tell our story today.

SAN LORENZO

San Lorenzo is a world of its own. In the heart of Rome yet somehow outside of it, always in dialogue with the city—sometimes in contrast, sometimes in continuity. Destroyed in 1943 by 4,000 bombs, it has held on to a popular, authentic soul that brings together longtime residents, students, artists, and artisans. We’re proud to take part—respectfully—in the renewal this neighborhood is experiencing today, a place that has always captivated us with its unique, unrepeatable identity.
